The Boys in Purple continued their winning ways despite having their fan base be outnumbered for the first time in four years.
In the second inning (must be Dodger fans), twenty odd (and I can't stress the word "odd" enough) fans from Pernod's home base showed up to the game. Allegedly under the influence of multiple sources of alcohol, the stands began to shake and quake in attempts to throw the Modsquad off their game.
Thankfully, their attempts were unsuccessful.
Led by the two C's and a D, Iannantuoni and Lima, the Modsquad offense kicked into high gear. With a 14-7 victory over Pernod, the Modsquad moved into sole possession of first place.
Iannantuoni and Lima each collected four hits and each scored three runs. Lima had been struggling at the plate in recent weeks, but broke out in a big way last night. Lima led off the third inning with a home run and later doubled home an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Nick DiFranza collected four RBIs in the victory.
Alfrin Vallejo doubled and tripled in the game, raising his average to a whopping .621, a career high for the Modsquad super utility man. Barring any US imposed travel restrictions to Portugal, Vallejo played his last game of the 2011 season. For the year, Vallejo collected 18 hits and drove in 16 runs while scoring 14 times, all career highs.
Modsquad outfielder Greg "Butterflies" Anderson drove in the go ahead run in the fourth inning, and the Modsquad never looked back. (Editor's Note: It's almost impossible to tell if Anderson drove in the winning run, we just needed to work his new nickname, Butterflies, into the article)
The outfield played solid defense again, despite missing regular Roger Swingle. Swingle is on the DL for having a pinched nerve, or as he puts it, Quasimodo like symptoms.
Team owner and manager Frank Vitale pitched effectively in Big Joel's absence. Vitale struck out the final batter to seal the win.
The Modsquad has one regular season game remaining, a final tuneup against Jackson Lewis before heading into the playoffs.
