The squad came out of the gates like a nag ready for the glue factory in game 1.  Their adrenaline level was comparable to yesterday's can of soda left out in the sun, flat and full of bloated dead yellow jackets.  Running into outs, stopping dead between the bases and looking around, making hitting the cutoff and backing up plays seem like some long dead ritual from some long forgotten lovecraftian primordial civilization.

The Pernod ten seemed like the reincarnation of the 1927 murderers row Yankee team, reeling off runs between snickering at the ineptitude and disinterest of the dimers,  like some rocker beating up Pete Townshend's mod doppelgänger in quadrophenia.

Not much to report in the way of stellar plays in game 1, and Dr. Kevorkian arrived in inning 5 to pull the plug in a much needed mercy killing.

Now the good part.  After a much needed pep talk by Nick, I think he said "Let's Go" and everyone shrugged and said "ok" the squad put 4 up in the first, only to watch the 'nods gain ground and take a 10-6 lead.  At that point the scorekeeper passed the book to Mike, Felix's ride, hoping to change the luck of the team.  The crucial moment was the 6th inning, when the mod squad tied the score on a gorgeous string of hits, and a few miscues by the Pernods, who maybe were finally feeling a little tightness as to their position in unseating the champs.  A key hit by Alan with two down in the 7th, after the squad let up a run in the bottom of the sixth, tied it up again.

After a scoreless 8th, the mods put up 4 in the ninth to take it to a final this week, weather permitting.  As a bystander, I must say this team, the reigning champs, showed the caliber of determination reminiscent of londoners during the blitz, taking all that their opponents could throw at them, and emerging victorious.  Stellar batting by Greg and Nick kept us in it, and all contributed in the win with timely hits and exemplary defense in game 2.  So now we wait for Tropical storm Lee to leave the area, and await a final tilt in the gloaming sometime soon.

A word to Pernod, be afraid, be very afraid

Game 1 15-4 Pernod Ricard in 6 innings
Game 2 15-12 ModSquad in 8 innings

Game 1.  ModSquad again had a bad start as the home team by allowing Pernod Ricard to score a bunch of runs in the top of the first and spent the rest of the game unsuccessfully trying to catch up.  In the second time through the lineup the squad was able to scratch 4 runs across the plate but it was too little, too late.  Pernod kept the pressure on and pulled ahead by 11 and end the game in the 6th.

Game 2.  After a short break and following some inspirational words by DiFranza, the boys in purple turned the tables on Pernod.  They gave Pernod a dose of their own medicine and used the away team status to their advantage by putting 3 quick runs on the board in the top of the first.  The bats then cooled off with only 2 runs scored in innings 3 through 5.  Pernod kept adding to their run total and were up by 6 after 5.  Then the squad came roaring back scoring 5 in their half of the 6th inning to pull to within 1.  In the top of the 7th the squad showed that they were not ready to quit and were able to score the run needed to pull even.  In the bottom of the 7th Pernod got the winning run all the way the 3rd base but the defense held.  The top of the 8th started with a man on 2nd base and ModSquad took advantage with 3 doubles in the inning pushing 4 runs across the plate.  Pernod was only able to get the runner on 2nd base home before ModSquad tallied the 3rd out.

The final match up between the evenly matched 2 best teams in White Plains (industrial league, division DJ) will be held whenever the flash flood warnings caused by tropical depression Lee finally vacate the northeast.  Maybe even before the fall league starts.

Modsquad Advances to Championship Series

In the first inning last night the boys in purple showed some rust from not having played in almost 2 weeks.  The Amscan hitters put 6 runs on the the board in the top of the inning.  ModSquad did little to respond in the bottom half besides Nick DiFranza continuing his MVP bid with a double.  In the 2nd ModSquad woke up, allowing no runs on defense and getting right back in the game with a 5 run outburst spurred on by the 5 through 10 hitters and Chris Iannantuoni clearing the bags with a 3 run home run.  After adding a run each in the 4th and 5th to tie and pull ahead by 1 the defense again had a lapse and allowed 5 runs to Amscan who also refused to back down.  Finally the tenacity of the ModSquad showed when in the bottom of the 5th after 2 quick outs the boys put a huge rally together made up of timely hitting and some unfortunate errors by the Amscam defense.  When the dust settled the ‘Squad had scored 8 runs to pull ahead by 4.  This time they would not relinquish the lead and added another run in the 6th to make the final tally 16-11.  Offensive standouts included Iannantuoni (4-5 3B HR), DiFranza (4-4 3 doubles), Brogdon (2-3 BB 2 runs), and Leahy (3-4 2B 3B). The team will now regroup and prepare to face regular season rival Pernod Ricard in a double header for all the marbles on Thursday.  The 2 teams split the 4 previous head to head match ups.
